Changing jobs is never just about a new role: it’s about embracing a new way of working, thinking, and growing. After a year and a half at Yardi Romania, Claudiu Gomboș, Principal Software Development Engineer, reflects on his journey. Coming from a BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) company, his move to a product-focused role meant new ways of working and fresh opportunities for growth. Did he find it challenging? Let’s find out!

Starting the Journey

Q: Tell us a bit about your professional background before joining Yardi

Claudiu: I started out in development with Visual C++ and Delphi and then spent the next 13 years working with .NET. During that time, I also created products using JavaScript (which is still my favorite language), Angular, and React. It’s interesting to see and feel how technologies and approaches evolve, even within the same branch.

I sometimes think back to the big differences between processes back then and now. Not many companies had a Project Manager, QA was often overlooked, and unit testing or TDD were still in their early stages. Task Management, Knowledge Bases, barely worth mentioning at the time. Now, we’re “spoiled” with all these things plus AI. I also spent quite a bit of time with Node.js and browser applications. One thing is certain: we never run out of challenges.

Q: What motivated you to switch from an outsourcing company to a product company like Yardi?

Claudiu: There were three main reasons. First, I wanted to socialize more, to come to the office, communicate, and exchange ideas face-to-face. It’s also great to make friends in Cluj, and I already had a few at Yardi. In fact, one of them even recommended me here. I came from a very pleasant and professional environment, with great processes and a positive mindset. I’ve also found many of those things at Yardi.

The second reason was of a more practical nature, as I needed to make a financial investment and coming to Yardi felt like an upgrade from this point of view. The third was flexibility. While I enjoy coming to the office, I also value having the option to work from home when necessary.

First Impressions

Q: What were your first impressions when you joined Yardi? Did the onboarding experience help you integrate smoothly?

Claudiu: At first, the onboarding and hiring process felt a bit bureaucratic. Over time, though, I came to understand its purpose, especially given the large number of employees spread across different parts of the world. Since Yardi is a large company, some projects are more complex while others are easier to handle. In my case, things went very smoothly. Plus, the team members are amazing. The people I met all have a “let’s do it” attitude, they’re friendly, and they’re ready to help.  I even wrote a short article about that on my LinkedIn.

Growth, Collaboration & Support

Q: In your first year, what skills (technical or soft) did you develop the most?

Claudiu: At the beginning, I set aside a bit of time every day to check out what’s new in .NET Core. I also made it a habit to read something related to technology or new approaches every day, whether from YouTube, blogs, GitHub, etc.

Q: With over 100 people in the programming department, how would you describe collaboration with your team and managers?

Claudiu: It’s clear that everyone wants to do things as well as possible. They’re ready to step in and help whenever needed. I felt like part of the team from day one.

Q: How much professional and personal support did you receive during your first year at Yardi?

Claudiu: From a business perspective, I always received help whenever I needed it. Technically, I really appreciated the attitude of: “If you see something that can be improved, and you want to improve it, you can.” In outsourcing, there often isn’t time for “make it better,” and things remain at the level of “make it work.”

Reflections & Advice

Q: After spending 1 year at Yardi, what do you value most about working here?

Claudiu: One thing I truly admire is the company culture, which offers and demands respect, understanding, and collaboration. It creates a pleasant and friendly environment. Plus, one extra perk: not every company has its office at The Office.

Q: What advice would you give a fellow software developer that is considering applying at Yardi Romania?

Claudiu: I’m not sure I can give advice; it really depends on what someone is looking for. If you want to work with 10 different technologies in 2 years, then outsourcing is probably the better fit. But if you believe that understanding a business and helping it grow is more important than constantly jumping from one technology to another, Yardi is a company worth recommending. That said, there are plenty of technical challenges and diversity here too. Most importantly, no one limits our personal development, on the contrary, it’s encouraged. The company even has a budget of about $2,000 per person/per year for anyone who wants to learn something that requires financial investment. So it’s up to us to take responsibility for our learning and development and become as good as we want to be.

So…

Claudiu’s first year at Yardi Romania has been about more than adapting to a new workplace: it’s been about growth, taking ownership, and seeing the real impact of building products that last. The transition from outsourcing went smoothly and brought new perspectives and a stronger sense of purpose in his work. His journey shows that, with the right mindset, change can be the key to professional growth and lasting satisfaction.
