Hi there! I’m Alexandra, Recruitment Marketing Specialist at Yardi Romania, and I’m back with a new blog article.
As our Client Support & Consultancy Department continues to grow and we open new roles, I wanted to explore what it’s really like to work as a Technical Account Manager (TAM) at Yardi, and what it looks like day to day.
To get a clearer picture, I spoke with four of my colleagues – Ionuț, Iulia, Paul, and Maria– who work as TAMs across different teams at Yardi Romania. Each of them shared their own perspective, shaped by anywhere from 3 to over 10 years of experience with the company.
From all walks of life to TAM
One of the most interesting things about the Technical Account Manager (TAM) role? There’s no “one-size-fits-all” background. Everyone I spoke to had a completely different path, but they all found their way to the same place.
Ionuț joined directly as a TAM (even though he initially applied for another role), coming from customer support, IT helpdesk, and even a bit of Robotic Process Automation. Iulia made a bigger switch, from law to tech, teaching herself SQL and realizing her financial law knowledge can actually be put to good use.
Maria and Paul, on the other hand, both transitioned internally at Yardi. Maria came from a data & communication-focused job while Paul moved from Customer Care into a more complex, technical position.
Despite having different starting points, they all reached the same destination – proof that there’s more than one way to become a TAM.
So… What does a Technical Account Manager actually do?
In simple terms: problem solving. TAMs help clients use Yardi software, whether that’s fixing issues, setting things up, or handling custom requests. As Iulia said:
“It’s a mix of technical troubleshooting, understanding how clients’ business works, and making sure they feel supported.”
Paul compared it to detective work 🕵️🔍: clients come to you when they’re stuck, and you figure out what’s going on and how to fix it.
Before starting, most of them had a slightly different idea of what the TAM role would be and shared a few common misconceptions. Ionuț expected repetitive customer support work with constant calls but found the work to be far more varied and complex. Iulia and Maria were initially intimidated by the accounting side, while Paul thought it would require strong programming skills.
Having a basic understanding of these areas is an advantage, but most of what you need, you’ll learn as you go on with the job. You’re supported from day one through a solid onboarding process, but building confidence takes time…and the learning never really stops.
The TAM role is also highly flexible: you can grow into a Senior or leadership position, move in a more technical direction, switch projects, or become a Subject Matter Expert, trainer, or mentor.
As Iulia put it: “it’s really about how far you want to go.”
You’ll never walk work alone…
A TAM’s “day in the life” is about solving client issues and communicating via email with occasional calls or meetings along the way. 💻
Days usually start with checking emails and tickets. As Ionuț mentioned, “a quick check on the mailbox to confirm no major issues occurred overnight”, then planning based on priorities and meetings. When juggling multiple clients, they all rely on priority levels, starting with critical cases first.
The work itself is super varied, without many repetitive tickets. As Ionuț pointed out, that’s kind of the goal: solving issues in a way that they don’t keep coming back, which means a lot of digging into root causes and working with other teams.
You might deal with anything from financial reports and data issues to system configurations or custom requests. And as Iulia said, it’s often not just about fixing something; it’s about figuring out what’s happening behind the scenes.
And one thing they all agreed on: you’re never working alone. As Maria shared, there’s constant collaboration across teams and Yardi offices around the world, because faster answers mean happier clients.
Do you have what it takes…? 🤔
What really matters is your mindset: curiosity, logical thinking, and a willingness to learn. But having some SQL or accounting knowledge is definitely a plus. Ionuț, for example, started with zero SQL experience and built his skills step by step, emphasizing that it’s important “not to be afraid to play around in SQL.” Iulia shared that the accounting foundation she had provided a solid starting point, with the rest of her expertise developing progressively over time.
On the soft skills side, communication is essential. As Paul explained, keeping things clear and easy to follow makes a big difference when presenting solutions, while Ionuț highlighted how strong communication helps build trust with clients and navigate more complex situations.
Curiosity also came up as a key trait, in Iulia’s view:

So… what makes the role worth it?
- Your work has a real impact: solving complex problems, helping clients move forward, and actually seeing the results of your work.
- You get those “aha” moments: when you finally understand the issue, it feels great and you’re already halfway to solving it.
- Your impact gets recognized: through direct client feedback and even meeting clients in person at international conferences.
- You won’t get bored: no two days (or clients) are the same, so you’re always learning and growing.
- You build real connections: building trust and being able to mirror your client’s energy makes all the difference.
One last takeaway? Don’t be intimidated. You don’t need to know everything from day one. Stay curious, ask questions, and the rest will come with time.
