What’s it really like to get hired as a software developer at Yardi Romania? To find out, we spoke with Lavinia Rus, a Senior Recruiter who’s been part of the Yardi team for the past eight years, spending the last three years focusing on tech recruitment. With a background in generalist hiring and experience collaborating across departments, Lavinia shares how her role has evolved, what she’s learned from developers, and why the human side of recruitment still matters most.

Lavinia’s Path to Yardi and the Tech World

Q: You’ve been recruiting for 8 years. What has kept you here?

Lavinia: Honestly, it’s the people and the stability, and the learning opportunities. There’s a sense of continuity that’s rare in today’s landscape – a shared intention to build things that last. At the same time, I’ve had space to grow, take on new challenges, and learn from the people around me. This kind of environment has kept me grounded in my work and still curious about what comes next.

Q: What changed for you when you started recruiting for technical roles? What surprised you the most?

Lavinia: When I shifted from being a generalist recruiter to focusing on technical roles, I initially thought I’d have to adapt my language to fit into the tech world. But what surprised me was that my technical colleagues adapted theirs too, and in doing so, challenged the common perception that developers are harder to engage with. We met somewhere in the middle, and that created trust. That was refreshing.

What It’s Really Like to Hire Software Developers

Q: What’s the biggest challenge in recruiting software developers today?

Lavinia: One of the biggest challenges is cutting through the noise in a very crowded space. Developers are constantly contacted, often in ways that feel impersonal or irrelevant. To stand out, you must be honest, respectful of their time, and understand what makes a role meaningful to them.

“I see recruitment as a partnership with the tech teams, and when there’s effective communication on both sides, things work better for everyone.”

Q: In your experience, what makes software developers stand out beyond technical skills?

Lavinia: Curiosity and awareness. A learning mindset that shows openness and growth, and the ability to see the bigger picture, not just their tasks, but how their work supports a product, a user, or a team. It’s these people who often become strong collaborators and who grow quickly within the team.

Recruiting for the Yardi Team

Q: What have you learned from working with the tech teams at Yardi?

Lavinia: I’ve seen how important it is to build stable teams. Yardi’s programming department isn’t a place where people come and go quickly. There’s a lot of thought put into hiring people who are not only skilled but who will thrive with their colleagues over time.

I’ve learned how important it is to listen, not just to hiring needs, but to team dynamics, to unspoken expectations. I see recruitment as a partnership with the tech teams, and when there’s effective communication on both sides, things work better for everyone.

“Yardi is a good place for those who prefer depth over flash”

Q: What kind of developers tend to thrive in Yardi’s tech teams?

Lavinia: People who are curious, reliable, and team-oriented.

In every team, there’s a mix of characters and personalities, people with different working styles, strengths, and ways of thinking.

At Yardi, we work on long-term products, so being consistent, open to feedback, and eager to learn goes a long way. It’s a good place for those who prefer depth over flash and who want to grow at their own pace with the support of their team.

The developers who thrive here are passionate, bring a creative mindset, show patience and awareness, and have an eye for detail. Communication and teamwork matter just as much as technical skill, and it’s that combination of personal drive and collaborative spirit that makes a lasting impact. Especially in groups built for the long run, these qualities turn a group of individuals into something stronger: a team.

A Final Piece of Advice

Q: What’s one piece of advice you’d give someone applying for a dev role at Yardi today?

Lavinia: Be honest. We’re interested in who you are, what motivates you, and where you want to go next. Tell us what excites you, what challenges you’ve faced, and what you want to learn next. That honesty helps us understand where you’d fit best and what kind of team would help you thrive.
